The first three books in my Open Source Security series covered Nessus,Snort, and Ethereal.The authors and I worked hard to make these books usefulto complete beginners, enterprise-scaled users, and even programmers whowere looking to enhance these tools. Giving programmers the capability to addcomponents to each tool was one focus of several. For example, I dissected apreprocessor in the Snort 2.0 and 2.1 books and explained how you mightbuild another.To do that, I had to learn Snort’s inner workings by readingmuch of the code.
