Thepurposeofthisbookistointroducethereadertothebasictheory
ofsignaldetectionandestimation.Itisassumedthatthereaderhasa
workingknowledgeofappliedprobabilityandrandomprocessessuchas
thattaughtinatypicalfirst-semestergraduateengineeringcourseonthese
subjects.Thismaterialiscovered,forexample,inthebookbyWong(1983
inthisseries.Moreadvancedconceptsintheseareasareintroducedwhere
needed,primarilyinChaptersVIandVIl,wherecontinuous-timeproblems
aretreated
Thisbookisadaptedfromaone-semester,second-tiergraduatecourse
taughtattheUniversityofIlinoisandatPrincetonUniversity.However
thismaterialcanalsobeusedforashorterorfirst-tiercoursebyrestricting
coveragetoChaptersIthroughv,whichforthemostpartcanbereadwith
abackgroundofonlythebasicsofappliedprobability,includingrandom
rectorsandconditionalexpectations.Sufficientbackgroundforthelatter
