Proxmox Virtual Environment (PVE) stands out as a comprehensive open-source platform for enterprise virtualization, offering a full suite of features along with user-friendly management tools. With its built-in web interface, users can effortlessly oversee virtual machines, containers, software-defined storage and networking, high-availability clusters, and various out-of-the-box utilities. Built on Debian, PVE is a lightweight, feature-rich alternative to ESXi with lower hardware requirements, capable of running on nearly all x86 hardware. Leveraging QEMU/KVM and LXC, it serves as an open-source server virtualization management solution. Developed and maintained by Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH, the code follows the GNU Affero GPL v3 license. PVE provides an easy-to-use WebUI and CLI for managing virtual machines, containers, high-availability clusters, storage, and networking. In comparison to popular Hypervisors like VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Xen, PVE is more lightweight and agile, demonstrating higher efficiency when running OW/LEDE virtual machines on standard x86 models. Furthermore, Proxmox VE integrates seamlessly with the Proxmox Backup Server, enabling full and incremental backups for VMs and containers, significantly reducing network load and saving valuable storage space.
